Vanishing Places

Series Title: The Last Life of Christopher Salvatore

Creator: M.J.Miello

Format: Novel, Series

Genre: Literary Fiction

Setting:  The novel is split between Staten Island, New York in the 1980s and an alternate dreamscape known as the Inner Realm.

Synopsis:

Christopher Salvatore has lived this life before. Seventy-four times, to be exact. Every time, however, he has failed to avoid the violent confrontation that prevents him from fulfilling his life’s purpose. With one last chance, he must live again. Once again, he is born on March 27, 1975. Once again, he is raised in a family ever on the verge of falling apart. The same challenges present themselves. His brother terrifies him. A nun is out to destroy him. The kids at school torment him, and his best friend is in love with a psychopath. The one bright spot is the new girl in class, but he can’t even bring himself to talk to her. These dilemmas, however, are only the surface of a deeper mystery. Why does the White Angel appear in his dreams? Why do the wishes she grants him never quite work out the way he means them to? And why do so many other versions of himself inhabit his inner-world? All he knows is that something enormous is at stake as he makes the seemingly ordinary choices of his youth.

Themes:

Part coming of age drama. Part dreamscape where internal conflicts are played out between a pantheon of sub-personalities. As a whole, it’s a story about salvation, acceptance, and the self restored.
